Why do they blame women instead the rich(another rich and attractive men)? -- just being a coward in front of the strong men? This individualistic and animalistic approach cannot explain anything about social enforcement on being an individual man.

When the knowledge of desirability increases and becomes naturalized, those who try not to conform are regarded as abnormal. Particularly, when marriage and child rearing is culturally and nationally valued, the abnormalization prevails. Existing literatures participate in this abnormalization, seeing it as a social problem.

What does it mean that Asian countries are sexually conservative? Is it really true? Isn’t it a misunderstanding that treats predefined ethnic culture as truism? What is sexual conservatism not only in sexual beliefs, practices, desires, and rights in different population groups? Asian sexual conservatism as an ideology?

Seth says he doesn’t think Asians are sexually conservative because of their cultural products such as Japanese porns and animation, and of the fact that they are not religion. He doesn’t relate Confucious ideas to sexual conservatism.

-       it relates to regional studies on the whole, on how Asian countries are defined as. How does this certain stereotype emerge? What does it mean having this stereotyping?

1) No need to cover every literature now.
2) ASK: Is it alright to do before I even don't pass the qualification exam? - Yes, I guess. What I'm doing now is mere literature review on limited range of the one for my dissertation. I will cover gender and sex in migration, eventually. For that, I am covering the range of masculinity (gender) and refugee (migration), first. Just get to the target first.
3)"sex lives"(the very micro level) will come later. The "East Asian cold-war sexuality/masculinity" will come later, too.

S really wants me to write a piece that everybody should cite.

What should be studied, then? I can show how the knowledge production on sexuality and migration is gendered or possibly queered. You can calculate ration of hetero/homo in studies of sexuality and migration. Additionally, you can show how gender is related to the tendency. Think of the article that argues studies of sexuality in Korea is pretty much just gendered, producing the knowledge of gendered sexuality.

오빠가
호재 오빠, 미친 구여친들을 만나는 경우가 있고,
나를 만나는 경우가 있어. 여기서 '나'는 오빠를 만나서 되게 '좋은 사람'이 된 '나'야.

호재씨를 만나면 오빠가 '좋은' 사람이 되기 때문이야.
그런데 내 앞에서 '어머님'처럼 되고 말잖아? 그 사람들 앞에서는 '어머님'처럼 굴지 않아도 되기 때문이야.

어떻게 보면 두 경우 모두 나쁜 거야.
그 사람들 만나면 괴롭지. 오빠를 직접적으로 괴롭히니까.
나를 만나도 괴롭지. 나를 괴롭히는 자기 자신을 보니까.

결국 오빠는 끝까지 외로울 수밖에 없어. 호재 씨 정도를 만나면서.

오빤 여기서 생각해야해. 난 오빠를 절대로 버리지 않아.

내가 유학을 가고 안 가고에 대해 동요하고 있는 건 사실이야. 이런 '동요'가 오빠한텐 불충분하겠지만, 나한테는 너무 커서 두려워. 서울대, 중앙대 사람들 만나서 박사과정을 문의 중에 있었어. 오빠가 석사 논문 쓰고 있을 동안 그걸 준비하려고 했어. 사람들이 나를 불신하더라. 네가 국내대학원이라니 믿을 수 없다고. 그런데 나한텐 공부보다 오빠랑 함께 있는 게 더 중요해. 박사과정부터는 월급쟁이야. 직업 연구자. 그런 직업을 얻는 거, 한국에서도 충분히 할 수 있고 난 잘 승진해나갈 수 있어. 유학 안 가도 난 여기서도 충분히, 한국에서 일등할 수 있다고 확신해, 내 분야에서. 근데 오빠랑 떨어져 있으면 어디서도 일등 못해. 이건 오빠때문이라기보다는, 오빠 곁에 있고 싶어하는 나 때문이야.

애정이 식었다는 거. 그 말 한마디면 사실 전부 끝장나는 게 연애라는 것도 알아. 식은 불씨 다시 틔우는 거 불가능하다는 것도 알아. 다만 이게 내 진심이야. 논문 잘 써. 오빠는 석사 논문 제출만 남은 '이미 석사'야. 두렵고 괴로운 거, 조금만 더 버텨. 많이 힘이 되어주지 못해서 미안해.

참고로 작가 무라카미 하루키가 이야기한 ‘소년의 매력적인 조건’이라고 하는 것은
첫째, 변명하지 않는다. 
둘째, 괴로운 상황이 닥쳐도 그것들을 꿀꺽 삼키면서 묵묵히 앞으로 한 발자국 내딛는다. 
셋째, 평소에는 멍청해 보이지만 막상 무슨 일이 닥쳤을 때는 제법 그 일을 꽤 잘 해낸다

점검

만난지 석달째 되는 날이 눈앞에 다가온다.

긍정적인 신호들:
서로 통화하면 30분 이상을 보내기도 하고,
서로 이야기했던 것들을 기억해준다.
만나서 밥 먹고 장난치고 농담하고 춤도 추고 노래도 부르며
잘 돌봐주는 것도 그대로.

여전히 지지부진한 것들:
눈빛과 시선
관계에 대한 언사들
관계가 안정되다보니 심심하니까 만나는 건가 싶어진다. 관계에 대해 책임지지 않으려는 말들을 여전히 하고 있기도 하고.

장난치고 농담하고 춤추고 노래하는 것빼곤, 그가 친구들이랑 만나서 하는 것과 별로 다르지 않은 것같다.

'남자친구'라고 하고 다니겠다는 나의 선언에 별로 개의치 않았던 것이 긍정적인 신호였다고 생각하자니,
내가 그렇게 말하고 다녀봤자 그가 속해있는 세계에서 아무런 일도 벌어지지 않기 때문에
그런 선언이란 기실 연애 없는 남자친구라는 형용모순에 불과하다.


나의 대처:
되도록 과거를 꺼내지 않으려 '노력중'. 가끔 욱하고 말을 꺼낼 때가 있어 점수를 까먹고 있다.
맛있는 밥을 차려주고 있다.
조급해하거나 투정부리지 않는다.
뜸하게 연락하려고 노력한다.

난점:
목발짚은 상태. 너무 가엾어 보이고, 종속적이고 의존적으로 행동할 수밖에 없다.
그가 처한 문제에 개입할 수도, 물러설 수도 없는 노릇.

앞으로 어떻게 하면 좋을까:
아예 목발을 던져버리기 전까지는, 이 관계가 도약할 수 있으리라고 믿지 않는다.
논문에 열중하면서 나 스스로를 돌본다.

휴대전화에 저장된 이름을, Gia 그러니까 <노래하는 검은 새가 있었네>의 주인공 이름으로 바꾸어 놓았다. 언제고 날아가 버릴 지 모른다는 것을 시종 되새김질하지 않으면, 이내 곧 두려워지기 때문이다.
그래서 이젠 휴대전화에 그의 이름이 뜰 때마다, 더욱 마음이 불안해지고 또 설레게 되는 것이다.
그에게 연락이 올 때마다 더이상 연락이 오지 않을 지도 모를 순간을 상기한다.
그리고 그를 만나게 되면, Gia가 얼마나 아름답고 유머러스하고 생기넘쳤는지를 가능한 한 많이 기억하려고 애쓴다.

당신은 오늘 내 사진을 찍어 갔지만 나에게는 당신의 사진이 아직 없다.

낙관의 함정

낙관의 함정에 빠져 비관하고 있다. 잠시 낙관하고 잠시 미래를 그렸던 것이 그렇게 잘못이었는지 비관이 엄습해왔다. 이 비관을 뚫고 나가면 나는 지혜를 맞이겠지만 그는 과연 돌아올까. 앞선 경험이 주었던 지혜가 있어, 나는 일단 기다리는 중이다. 그러나 이내 내가 기다리는 것(expecting)이 하나가 아님을 알게 되었다. 미안하다는 말은 어떤 말들로 주렁주렁 달고 올까. 시간이 더디 간다.

비관주의 로맨스

비관주의자가 지혜로운 것은, 그가 비로소 비관을 견디어 냈을 때 지혜가 영글기 때문이다. 어떤 단단한 비관이 있어 나에게 기대어오는 요즘, 나는 매순간 매료되면서도 두려워진 나머지 비관을 길들이겠다는 보수적인 기획을 마음에 품기에 이르렀다. 그러나 문득, 나의 비관 없이는 이 모든 것이 물거품처럼 사라지고 말리라는 현실을 깨닫고, 나의 비관이 이 관계의 조건임을 직시하고 말았다. 결국 우리는 서로의 비관을 알아보고 또 모르는 채 하면서 상대방에게 매료되는 동시에 이내 두려워지고 말아 그저 서로를 껴안고 있는 것이었다.

나는 방법론의 파괴자

"연구참여자"라는 말은 그들이 그저 교체가능한 인터뷰이 1, 2가 아니라, '바로 그 사람'의 '참여'가 없으면 연구가 성립되지 않거나 무너져버리는 상황에만 사용해야 하는 거 아닌가? 지금 하나가 실제로 무너지게 생겼거든.ㅋ

연구참여자, 인포먼트. 이 둘다 결국 그들의 말(뒤)에 진리가 있다는 신념을 공유하고 있다. 그렇다면 인포먼트, 연구참여자라는 명명은 결국 이런 인식론적 차원으로 사고되고 분리될 것이 아니다. 오히려 문제는 존재론(?)이 아닌가 싶다. 그들의 '특유성' 자체가 얼마나 연구에 영향을 미치는가, 그들이 얼마나 연구 자체를 '좌우'하는가라는 지점 말이다. 그렇다면 '연구참여자'라는 명명 대신 다른 말을 만들어내는 것이 좋을 것이다.

이기형 교수는 덴징한테 그렇게 영감을 받았었다는데 나는 대체 어떻게 하면 좋을지 모르겠다. 하하.

이론을 해라 비판을 하지 말고.

상대하는 논의 혹은 이론이 결국 자가당착에 불과하다는 수준으로까지 밀어붙이지 않으면, 자기가 비판하려는 이론의 너그러운 통치 따위나 구걸하는 모양새를 완전히 벗어나기 힘들다. 흑인 문제를 다루지 못했다. 여성의 목소리가 빠져 있다. 길거리에 미친 여자 하나 나자빠져서 운다. 제발 경찰이 출동해주기를 바라면서.
